Students Tour USC Upstate Campus




Forty four juniors visited USC Upstate for a campus tour. Students had the opportunity to learn about admissions requirements and scholarships. They were shown campus facilities including the USC Upstate Wellness Center, library, classes and the dining hall. We thank USC Upstate admissions for their spectacular tour. Information Technology Career Cluster

Do you enjoy installing software on a computer? How would you like to write a computer program or teach people to use a computer or technical equipment? Are you skilled at using technology? If you answered "yes" to these questions then you should look at careers in the information technology cluster. The information technology cluster offers well-paid, high demand, quality jobs. Technology is constantly changing and having the proper training in information technology can make you a marketable candidate for jobs. If you enjoy math, are analytical, and are detail oriented, then this cluster may be for you. Some examples of careers in this cluster include computer programmer, management information specialist, network administrator, software designer, and operations research analyst. Insurance 101


Mrs. Wanda Brady, of State Farm Insurance, spoke to Mr. Cann's drivers education classes about car insurance. Students learned about car insurance and how it relates to their driving record. We thank Mrs. Brady for her time.

Careers in the Health Science Cluster









Ms. Debra Bradley and Mr. Joel

Livesay of Spartanburg Community College, spoke to students today about the Surgical Technology and Respiratory Care Programs. Surgical Technology is a 12 month program preparing students for careers as a surgical technician. Surgical technologists work in a variety of settings including veterinary offices, hospitals, research and product development, and the military. Students interested in this career should take health science courses offered at Swofford Career Center. For more information about this program click here.

Respiratory Care Therapists work in a variety of settings including hopsitals, home care, and pulmanary function labs. Students should take biology and chemistry while in high school. This program is a two year program. For more information, click here.

Job Shadow Day

Job Shadow Day is approaching! Be sure to turn in your Job Shadow Day permission form by January 15th. You can get a form in the Guidance office. Once you turn your permission form in, you'll get a packet for Job Shadow Day.

Job Shadow Day is February 2nd. Here are some tips for making Job Shadow Day a success:
Be prompt and punctual.
Be professional. Dress appropriately.
Ask the career professional questions to show that you have interest and to help you determine if this may be a job for you.
Follow up with a thank you note to the person you shadowed.

Learn about Surgical Technology and Respiratory Care Therapy

Representatives from Spartanburg Community College will be at Landrum on January 13th to discuss careers as a surgical technician and respiratory care therapist. The outlook for both careers is strong, as jobs will continue to rise due to the aging baby boom generation. The average salary for both careers is $45,000 per year. One to two years of college is required. SCC's surgical technician program is a 12 month program and the respiratory care therapy program is a two year program. To attend, students can sign up in Guidance or with their classroom teachers.
